The State Board Spotlight program is an opportunity for State Board of Education to select and recognize districts, schools and educators for great achievements and share those successful practices with others across the state. George Washington High School, Chicago - May

George Washington High School - Healthy Challenge Winning TeamIn May 2013, the State Board Spotlight was on George Washington High School, a Chicago Public Schools District 299 school on the city’s southeast side. Culinary students Vanessa Arnold, Leonard Gutierrez, Marina Nava, Karen Rivera and Leon Sanchez won a Healthy Schools Campaign competition to create a great-tasting lunch that meets nutrition standards on a tight budget, using only ingredients commonly available to school food service. The students traveled to Springfield to present their winning meal to the State Board of Education. Their award-winning lunch is Chicken Rancheros, Elotes Washington and Fruta del Trópico. Urbana School District 116 - January

Urbana District 116ISBE welcomed members of Urbana School District 116 to Springfield during the Board’s January 2013 meeting, putting them in the “State Board Spotlight.” District representatives shared their 21st Century Community Learning Center grant achievements, including a reduction in the achievement gap.
